ECHS Dress Code

Students’ clothing must not present a health or safety hazard or a distraction which would interfere with the educational process. Any clothing, emblem, baggage, jewelry, symbol or other insignia which creates a clear and present danger on school premises, affiliation with a gang, the violation of lawful school regulations, or the disruption of the orderly operation of the school is prohibited (BP 5132).

All students are expected to follow the following clothing guidelines at El Camino High School [AR 5132(a)]:

  • Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Flip flops, sandals, raised heel shoes, or shoes without a heel strap may not be worn while participating in physical education classes/activities.
  • Shoes with wheels (Heelies) and shoes with taps and heel plates that may damage school property are not permitted.
  • Hair nets, hoodies, and “doo rags” are not permitted at any time.
  • The following shirts are not permitted: strapless shirts or blouse/shirts showing the stomach and/or midriff; see-through blouses/or shirts; halter tops, tube tops, ribbed tank tops, spaghetti strapped clothing, and low-cut tops. Shirts must have two straps. Undergarments are not to be visible.
  • Shorts, dresses, and skirts must reach past the fingertips when hands and arms are extended at the individual’s side.  Rips in pants must not be higher than the bottom of the fingertips when hands and arms are extended at the individual’s side.  Pants/trousers/shorts must be an appropriate size and may not sag.  Undergarments are not to be visible. The buttocks must be covered completely. 
  • Students may not wear any clothing, head covering, jewelry, emblem, badge, symbol, or other insignia that: a. Advocates or encourages the use or abusive drugs, tobacco, or alcohol; b. Advocates violence, sexual violence, or sexually inappropriate conduct; c. Degrades, disparages, or otherwise stigmatizes and group or person on the basis of sexual orientation, race, disability status, national orientation, gender or age; d. May create a clear and present danger i.e. wearing spikes, chains (including wallet chains), large ornamentation.
  • Wearing clothing or accessories in such a manner as to be identified or associated with gangs or gang related activities are not allowed.  Writings on book bags, books, clothing or other items that identify or affiliates students with gangs are prohibited.

Head coverings that violate the dress code will be confiscated and disciplinary action will be taken.  El Camino High School is not responsible for any lost, damaged or stolen confiscated hats or head coverings. [AR 5132(a)]

Wearing or possessing such clothing items or accessories will result in disciplinary action as follows:


1.            Conference and notify parent / sent home to change

2.            Detention / Saturday School

3.            Saturday School / suspension
