Superintendent's Message on Corona Virus 4-1-20

    Dear SSFUSD Community,

As the impact of COVID-19 continues to unfold, we have received new updates from federal, state, and local agencies.

California State Superintendent of Schools, Tony Thurmond, announced that California school districts will continue with distance learning for the remainder of this school year, given current safety concerns. Superintendent Thurmond stated,

“Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom stated in his press briefing today that while schools are not open to students, distance learning will continue to be implemented.

As counties and districts throughout California seek to interpret the letter written by State Superintendent Thurmond, and Governor Newsom’s press briefing today, we will continue to work closely with the San Mateo County Health Department and San Mateo County Office of Education to ensure we provide essential support services for our students. San Mateo County Superintendent Nancy Magee, in collaboration with local district superintendents, has clarified that local public schools will remain open to provide distance learning, distribution of school meals, and other services as needed and feasible.

Please rest assured that we will continue to provide updates regarding any new information we may receive. While we are now preparing for school dismissals to continue through the end of the school year, we will also continue to provide at-home distributive learning (distance learning) and other essential services per our March 30th communication.

As a reminder, the update includes the following information:

    • Current school and district hours (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
    • Communication Expectations
    • At-Home Learning
    • Graduation, Promotion, and Grades
    • Technology Update
    • Meal Distribution

We realize the rapidly evolving nature of these circumstances can be stressful and unsettling. It is our goal to continue to serve our school communities and to keep our students engaged through the at-home learning process. Through our collective support of one another, we will continue to navigate through these challenging times, and will be stronger as a result. Thank you for your patience and perseverance. Please stay safe and healthy.

    Sincerely,
    Shawnterra Moore, Ed.D.
    Superintendent

    Senior-Junior Ball Postponed

Site administrators recently met with district administration to discuss the postponement of prom to Friday, May 15th.  The location will likely be the Galleria.  The price associated with having prom at the Galleria compared to SF City Hall is basically the same.  The price will remain at the current rate and will not increase.  The parent liability waiver will be updated to reflect the date and venue and will still be required.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we balance finding ways for students to still have opportunities like this while making decisions that are consistent with guidelines communicated by county health officials to all superintendents in the area.

Any changes to events like prom will continue to be evaluated and updates will be given in a timely manner. All tickets that have already been sold are valid for the May 15th prom date and location.  Any inquiries about refunds can be made with our ASB student leaders or in room 13A.  Ticket sales will resume at a later day - more information will come from our ASB student leaders.

    ECHS Softball Field

    Good afternoon El Camino Family!

I am happy to announce that construction on our new Softball field will begin on Monday, November 4th.  We are very excited that our softball players will be able to practice and play games on our campus in the near future.  The coaches, athletic directors, players, and their families/friends have worked hard over the past several years to advocate for our student-athletes and to communicate the need for this field.  We are grateful to our Board Trustees and the SSFUSD Facilities department for making this a reality. The new Softball field will be an artificial turf field that will be installed on the outdoor basketball court area near the small gym (see flyer).

The construction will likely take place during the next several months.  During construction the pedestrian and drive-in gates off of Evergreen (near the three-way stop intersection) will be only for construction access.  Students, staff, and community members will NOT be able to use that pedestrian gate to access the school during construction. Updates on progress and other important information will be communicated in the future.  Thank you for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Daniel Lunt, ECHS Principal
