Message from the Principal

Notes from …

Ms. Linda McDaniel, Interim Principal

October 15, 2014

My first priority as I assume this new role at El Camino High School is to be an effective communicator.  It is important to me to provide information to our community in a timely manner and with details.  In responding to the many questions from parents about our recent events, I can state the following:

A formal complaint following the District's Uniform Complaint Procedure was filed against Dr. Putney last week. This is not a criminal investigation and the complaint does not contain criminal allegations. The South San Francisco Unified School District Board of Trustees took action on Thursday, October 9, 2014, to place Dr. Putney on paid administrative leave. This is a standard practice while an independent third party completes the investigation.

Did you know it is Homecoming Week at El Camino High School?  How many of you remember the activities at your high school during Homecoming?  Any chance you were the King or Queen of the Homecoming Dance?  This is a reminder that all students who purchased a yearbook package with an ASB sticker have a free ticket to the Homecoming Dance.  Your student may pick up their free ticket on Thursday or Friday in the courtyard.  The dance is Friday evening from 7:00-10:00 p.m. in our gym.  The attire is consistent with school dress code rules.  There will be a DJ and photo booth, so I encourage you to get your student involved in school spirit by attending the first dance of the year.

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of announcing the Student of the Month for September.  I would like to congratulate the following students who were recognized by the following departments:

    *Overall Student of the Month

Jeff Steinberg, founder of Sojourn to the Past, spoke to students on Tuesday.  This program provides students with a ten-day academic immersion journey focused on the Civil Rights Movement.  He retired from a 14-year career as an AP History teacher/Department Chair in the San Francisco Bay Area to work full time with Sojourn. He has designed the Sojourn moving classroom experience with a rigorous curriculum for students aligned with California and national curriculum content standards.  Since its inception, Mr. Steinberg has led over six thousand students through Sojourn’s living history lesson, along the path of the Civil Rights Movement, through five states in the American South. Currently, Sojourn to the Past is active throughout California, New York, Ohio, and Massachusetts. Additionally, Mr. Steinberg makes hundreds of interactive presentations annually across the country on the lessons of the Civil Rights Movement and their relationship to current human rights issues and conditions.   Mr. Steinberg and the Sojourn Program are the recipients of numerous state and national honors and awards. There will be a parent meeting on October 28 for El Camino students who are interested in taking this journey.  The trip is planned for March 27-April 2, 2015.  If you need additional information, please contact Mr. Steinberg at Jeff@sojournproject.com.

Tutoring Available!

Tutors are available in the library after school Mondays, and Thursdays between 3:10 & 4:10. There will be teachers available to tutor and assist any student in their designated subject areas on these specific days. We encourage all students who need academic support to come to the library to receive that support. California Scholarship Federation students will also be available to assist students on all days tutoring is offered.  Click here for a schedule.
